Top 10 Cities Hiring in 2021 for Professional and Business Services

December 3, 2020

Talent acquisition professionals should prepare for robust hiring next year at companies providing Professional and Business Services in big cities throughout the U.S., from New York and Boston in the east to Detroit and Chicago in the heartland to San Francisco and Los Angeles on the West Coast.

Economists at LaborIQ® by ThinkWhy forecast that the Professional and Business Services industry should be primed for acceleration in 2021 as the promise of vaccines portends a stronger recovery on the horizon.

Professional and Business Services roles are expected to be in-demand in 2021.

That could create plenty of work for talent acquisition pros, whether they’re employed in-house or by third-party recruitment firms. Recruiters will have their hands full next year filling jobs in this industry, especially in the top 10 hiring locations by volume identified by LaborIQ: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington D.C., Atlanta, San Francisco, Boston, Houston, Dallas and Detroit.

Within the Professional and Business Services industry, some niches are likely to experience stronger job growth in 2021, while others are apt to see less robust hiring.

In the latter category, ironically, are niches that have maintained or grown their employment levels during the pandemic. Among them are companies specializing in scientific research and development, waste management and remediation, architecture and engineering, accounting and bookkeeping, and computer systems design and related services. These types of businesses could be in line for what’s considered “normal” growth next year.

Hiring for various roles at these companies is likely still very competitive, and unemployment rates are low for these positions. As a result, the supply of available talent will already be constrained. Moreover, these companies might not add as many new jobs because they did not lose as many during the COVID-19 recession. Still, there will be hiring due to turnover at positions in these niches next year, and a key strategy for talent acquisition pros will be to poach employees from their current jobs at other firms.

On the flip side of the coin, hiring in other Professional and Business Services niches could see hyper growth as demand returns in 2021, depending on the pace of the recovery. These niches include business support services, employment services, temporary help services, and travel arrangement and reservation services.

Since these were among the most severely impacted sectors in 2020, they could be prime candidates to rebound vigorously in the post-pandemic economy – assuming a surge of hiring and a resumption of travel. If that happens, talent acquisition pros in the top 10 cities should prepare to receive a flood of resumes from unemployed candidates vying for open positions at these types of businesses.
