Certification programs are a way for job seekers to build their expertise while also enabling employers to fill skills gaps and boost talent retention. A recent survey revealed that 94 percent of employees say they would stay at their company longer if their employers invested in their careers. Boredom, 33 percent say, is the top reason to look for a new job.

Certification programs were created to provide a pathway to improve skill-development opportunities and wages. As these programs have evolved, some certifications became less of a differentiator and more of a direct line to employment. For example, a career as a surgical technologist, industrial engineer technician or web developer is possible once an individual earns a certificate. For these professionals, the appeal is the ability to learn in an expedited timeframe.

Approximately 80 percent of information technology (IT) professionals find that industry certifications are valuable to their careers. The Global Knowledge 2019 IT Skills and Salary Report cites certifications in cloud computing, project management, cybersecurity and networking as among the highest paying in the field right now.

As the competition for talent grows, arming employees with the expertise required to stay engaged and productive for their organizations will become more vital to workforce management success.
