If virus counts surge due to holiday gatherings, expect initial unemployment insurance claims to jump back above 800,000 after the New Year. Initial unemployment insurance claims fell to 787,000 on a seasonally-adjusted basis, and continued claims fell to 5.2 million.

While the drop in initial and continued claims is good news, holiday week totals can be tricky. The main focus now to aid the recovery is the current relief bill and continued vaccine rollout.
